Which file diameter should be used for each chainsaw chain pitch
File diameter shapes the cutter edge. A file that is too small works too low in the cutter, while one that is too large may not engage enough of the working profile. The correct choice therefore starts with the chain manufacturer and full chain code, rather than a memorised rule based only on pitch.
Pitch is a starting point, not the complete answer
Common guidance often associates roughly 4.0 mm with some 3/8 low-profile chains, 4.8 mm with many .325 chains, and 5.2 or 5.5 mm with several 3/8 and .404 families. These figures must not be treated as universal specifications.
Manufacturers can use different cutter profiles within the same pitch. As cutters are sharpened and become shorter, some documentation recommends another diameter. The package, drive-link marking and technical chart for the exact chain family take priority.
How to find the exact recommendation
Look for the complete chain code, not only .325 or 3/8. It may appear on the package, drive link or purchase record. With that code, consult the manufacturer chart for file diameter, filing angle and depth-gauge setting.
If the chain can no longer be identified, a service shop can compare its profile and dimensions with a catalogue. Avoid experimenting with several files on the same cutter: repeated changes can alter the geometry before the correct size is found.
File position matters as much as diameter
The round file must be guided at the specified angle and height relative to the top plate. A compatible file holder helps maintain that position. Use controlled strokes from the inside towards the outside and keep cutter lengths consistent around the chain.
Depth gauges are checked separately with the correct gauge tool. Filing them too low does not compensate for a dull chain and can increase aggressiveness and kickback. Follow the machine manual and chain instructions for all angles and limits.
When to replace a file
A file that slides without removing material, has polished areas or requires heavy pressure is probably worn or clogged. Working with a dull file gives inconsistent results and wastes time.
Store files dry, separated and protected from impacts. Clean them according to their maker’s guidance and never use a bent or damaged round file. For frequent servicing, a simple record linking file sizes to chain families prevents tools from being mixed.
When hand filing is no longer enough
If cutters have very different lengths, angles have been repeatedly altered or the chain is damaged, selecting the right file will not solve the underlying problem. A workshop can restore consistent geometry with suitable equipment and assess whether the chain remains within service limits.
Carbide-tipped chains require different tooling from an ordinary file. Identify the cutter material before starting and never apply a standard-chain filing procedure to carbide inserts.
